1982 - U.S Marine Corps find VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in the water treatment plants providing most residents of Camp Lejeune with their drinking water. This includes Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point.
The toxic chemicals found in the drinking water include include Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), and / or its chemical precursor, Vinyl Chloride Monomer, (VCM), benzene, Trichloroethylene (TCE) and Tetrachloroethylene (PCE). These extremely toxic VOCs are used to make paints and paint thinners, dry cleaning agents, petroleum fuels, and some pharmaceuticals.
The levels of toxic chemicals found in Camp Lejeune water were between 240 and 3400 times levels allowed by government safety standards!
